Nature and biodiversity are at the heart of retail resilience and growth

The retail industry is dependent on the planet’s natural resources to produce the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the goods we buy. But unsustainable sourcing practices in our supply chain are increasing global nature degradation and biodiversity loss. Responsible sourcing practices are essential for building long-term supply chain resilience and mitigating nature-related business risks. Taking action on nature and biodiversity is also essential for achieving net zero, and incorporating nature into your work on climate will help to enhance your business’s decarbonisation efforts.

The BRC’s Plan for Nature is an ongoing campaign and programme of events that aims to initiate retail’s journey towards comprehensive industry-wide action on nature and biodiversity. We are supporting retail businesses by educating on the importance of nature and biodiversity and engaging with government and industry to identify barriers and enablers to nature-positive action. Find the full programme of events in the Plan for Nature Programme Overview.

Preparing for the upcoming deforestation regulations in the UK and EU is an essential place to start with improving your responsible sourcing practices. To join the Forest Risk Commodity Working Group, contact Sophie De Salis.

The retail industry is underpinned by the people that work in our supply chains, as well as in our stores. Upholding and reporting on the human rights and ethical labour standards in your supply chains is a vital element in ensuring your business sources its labour and products responsibly.
