The retail industry is supplied by global logistics operations across multiple transport modes and providers. Decarbonistion will require logistics data and the adoption of zero and low carbon fuels. ‘Last-mile’ delivery to customers will increasingly transition to high performance electric vehicles and other low-carbon transport.

Milestones

2025

  • Advanced fuel efficiency programmes for retailer fleet and drivers.
  • Collection of greenhouse gas performance data from logistics providers, to inform decision-making.

2030

  • Network and route sharing for optimised efficiency.
  • 100% net zero light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

2035

  • 100% zero carbon last mile logistics.
  • 100% zero carbon heavy duty vehicles (HGVs).
Alternative Transport

Action

Logistics is the vital link between raw material production, manufacturing, retailers, and customers, with efficient logistics networks representing the key to successful retail operations that deliver on quality, availability, and price. Reducing emissions from carbon-intensive transportation, such as maritime shipping, through alternative, lower-carbon methods, such as rail freight, is essential.

Final Mile Solutions

Many retailers rely on third-party delivery partners to take an order from the distribution centre to a customer’s home or workplace. Whilst convenient for customers, using heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) can be carbon intensive. Retailers can reduce carbon in these final journeys through optimising fuel efficiency, using low-carbon vehicles, and network- and route-sharing practices.
