Robust data on existing greenhouse gas emissions is essential for each retailer to plan its own decarbonisation priorities. Ambitious public targets, supplier engagement and the embedding of greenhouse gas data into corporate decision making will act as enablers on the path to net zero.

Milestones

2025

  • Retailer greenhouse gas measurement and public reporting.
  • Top suppliers committed to net zero and/or science-based targets.
  • Tier 1 manufacturing greenhouse gas data provided by top suppliers.
  • Internal cost of carbon adopted.

2030

  • Product greenhouse gas data provided by top suppliers.
  • Increase in the ‘cost per tonne’ of internal carbon price.
Measuring, Reporting & Target Setting

Action

To achieve rapid decarbonisation, retailers must fully understand, measure and report on the sources of greenhouse gas emissions across their value chain. Measuring and reporting is also essential for developing ambitious business commitments on net zero and setting realistic targets for decarbonisation. Setting Science-Based Targets (SBTs) is a key action retailers can take to demonstrate public ambition and report progress on their decarbonisation journey.

Supplier Data

Upstream and downstream supply chain emissions (known as ‘scope 3’ emissions) typically constitute the majority of a retailer’s overall carbon footprint. The breadth and complexity of retail supply chains, however, poses issues in obtaining timely and transparent emissions data from suppliers. Proactive engagement with suppliers to understand, measure and take action on emissions hotspots is essential for decarbonising retailer supply chains, and for ensuring businesses are not subject to ‘greenwashing’.
