Retailer sites range from small, local shops, to superstores, to distribution warehouses. Across all properties, heating, lighting and refrigeration are the dominant emissions sources. Sourcing renewable energy and installing efficient technologies can make zero-emission operations a near-term reality.

Milestones

2025

  • All new buildings to be powered by renewable energy.
  • 100% LEDs in all new buildings.
  • Only low-impact refrigerant gases (max. 150 global warming potential) for all new refrigeration installations.

2030

  • Sourcing 100% renewable electricity.

2035

  • Renewables to cover all sites total energy uses.

Action

Although store, office and warehousing operations (‘scope 2’ emissions) are not the largest emissions hotspots for a retailer, physical premises under the partial or full control of the business means that near-term site decarbonisation actions can be taken that improve energy efficiency, reduce the operating carbon footprint, and provide operational cost savings.
